Public lands in South Carolina are managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). Lands are managed for multiple uses and are available for everyone in South Carolina to enjoy. From hunting and fishing, to birding and wildlife viewing, to hiking, SCDNR lands provide access to outdoor recreation for everyone.
Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) - WMAs are SCDNR owned or leased lands managed for wildlife, habitat and hunting. In addition to hunting, visitors may utilize these properties for other recreational opportunities, including wildlife viewing, hiking and birding. Depending on the property, certain activities may be restricted to protect the resources. Some properties are closed during certain dates for scheduled hunts and events.
Heritage Preserves - Lands dedicated to protecting significant natural and cultural resources such as rare species and important historic or pre-historic sites. Some Natural Heritage Preserves are also WMAs and allow hunting, others such as Cultural Heritage Preserves do not allow hunting.
